Who we are

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Pharmacy department prepares and distributes medication used in the hospital and its clinics. The pharmacy provides care to patients daily through a unit-dose medication distribution system including oral unit dose preparation of tablets, capsules and oral liquids, intravenous (IV) antibiotics, total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and chemotherapy preparation.  The department also cares for patients involved in clinical drug studies and all specialized outpatient populations (e.g. genetics).

In addition, the Pharmacy provides care to patients in the Oncology Clinic and Hematology ward through its chemotherapy satellite pharmacy in the Hematology Clinic at the MCH. Patients in the Neonatal and Pediatric ICUs benefit from pharmacy satellites located between the two units. There are also clinical pharmacists present on many wards: hematology/oncology (B07N), general pediatrics (B09), the NICU (B06S) and the PICU (B06N).

Our history

Over the years the role of the hospital pharmacist has evolved from counting pills to actively participating in the pharmaceutical care of patients on the wards. Today, pharmacists are found in the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care units and the Hematology and General Pediatric units. There are also satellite pharmacies to provide direct service to the critical areas of the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units as well as the Hematology /Oncology clinic and inpatient unit.

Our team

The Montreal Children's Hospital provides pharmaceutical care to patients, education to health care professionals and families and are involved in research to improve patient care. We provide medications to all admitted patients and outpatient clinics, which includes intravenous admixtures and total parenteral nutrition.

Our pharmacists are not only specialized in pediatrics, but also in specific sectors such as oncology, critical care and infectious disease. They are present on care units as part of the interdisciplinary team and actively participate in clinical activities to optimize medication use and optimize patient care.
