Who we are

The Physiotherapy department at the Montreal Children’s Hospital offers assessment and short-term intervention to children and adolescents from birth to 18 years of age. As part of an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals (bringing together professionals from different departments in the hospital) our physiotherapists and other staff members work closely with the patient’s family to help each child achieve their maximum functional potential.

Together, our staff members have developed expertise in the evaluation and treatment of various medical and surgical patients referred by other services at the Montreal Children's Hospital.

We also evaluate patients referred by community pediatricians and family medicine practitioners that fit our tertiary care mandate.

Where the care happens

The Physiotherapy department sees both inpatients and outpatients from Monday to Friday, and provides treatment to certain inpatients over the weekend if needed.

We have an active outpatient department and our physiotherapists participate in many clinics including: Brachial Plexus, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Hemophilia, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neonatal, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Rheumatology, Spina Bifida, and Sports Medicine. There is also a physiotherapist on staff in the Complex Care Service.

We also participate in the Northern and Native Child Health Program in which therapists travel to villages around Hudson and Ungava to evaluate patients with various conditions and provide them with appropriate interventions.

Teaching and research

We are actively involved with the McGill University Physical Therapy Program, integrating the academic and clinical programs. We provide supervision for McGill physiotherapy students doing clinical rotations at the MCH, and we also teach pediatric physiotherapy courses at the university. Members of the physiotherapy department also participate in research projects and educational activities that enable us to share our knowledge and expertise with various medical professionals within the hospital and in the community.
