Who we are

The Department of Psychology is thoroughly integrated into every facet of care for chronically ill children and their families and committed to the highest standard of care. They are present when patients and families learn about diagnoses of serious illness, or following traumas; they also provide follow-up support for patients with chronic illnesses. They assist patients and families in dealing with feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, pain and loss that arise from these diagnoses and help them develop various coping strategies. In addition, they help map out brain function and brain alterations due to illness or injuries to assist in the design of interventions in rehabilitation centres as well as school-based interventions.

Our history

In the early 1950s, The Montreal Children’s Hospital’s first psychologist was appointed to use IQ and other tests to assess children with developmental delays. Since then, the Department of Psychology has consistently maintained a commitment to leading-edge science and practice.

Psychometric evaluations have evolved from the basic IQ of the 1950s into comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations of every aspect of the brain that help guide neurosurgeries and provide the canvas upon which rehabilitative interventions can be mapped out.

Our department was also one of the first to adopt cognitive-behaviour therapy—an evidence-based model of therapy—into its array of therapeutic interventions. In addition, to better serve the needs of its population, in the 1980s and 1990s the department created innovative clinics for the assessment and treatment of developmental delays and autism, failure to thrive and feeding disorders, as well as for eating disorders.

Our team

There are currently 30 psychologists working at The Montreal Children’s Hospital. They are highly trained professionals who are involved in responding to the full complexity of clinical situations. They work within multidisciplinary teams and provide tertiary care services on an inpatient and outpatient basis to all departments of the hospital. The Department required its team members to hold doctorates a full 20 years before the province made it mandatory. The department is also considered to be one of the top training sites in Quebec for psychology residents.

Our services

The Psychology Department’s programs are organized to provide services to a broad range of clientele. The largest program is Pediatric Psychology. Psychologists provide cutting-edge evaluations and interventions to pediatric inpatients and outpatients and their families that foster health and rehabilitation. The thrust of this program is on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness.

The Preschool Pediatric Psychology Program focuses on pre-school children who have complex physical, medical conditions and associated developmental, behavioural and psychosocial needs that interfere with growth and development. Psychologists in this program are involved with children with autism spectrum disorder, feeding disorders, and pediatric illnesses among others.

The Neuropsychology Program provides state-of-the-art evaluations of children with cerebral lesions as well as illnesses that affect brain function.

Psychologists in the Mental Health Program provide outpatient and inpatient services to children and families struggling with complex behavioural and emotional issues that affect their quality of life.
