Who we are

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Spina Bifida Service brings together specialists from several services at the hospital to provide care to children who have shunts (a tube which drains fluid from around the brain), as well as children with varying degrees of motor and sensory deficits, and children with neurogenic bladder and bowel (a condition which affects the spinal cord nerves that control bladder and bowel function). The team provides ongoing monitoring of patients to recognize complications and determine when there is a need for neurosurgical, urologic or orthopedic surgery.

Our history

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Spina Bifida Service was started in the late 1970s by Dr. John Blundell from the hospital’s department of Neurosurgery and Dr. Bob Gledhill from the department of Orthopedics. The departments of Urology and Pediatrics joined the service soon afterward. Eventually, the specialties merged into one multidisciplinary clinic with the addition of physiotherapy services and a coordinating secretary. The team members’ ongoing commitment ensures expert care for our patients and their families.

Our team

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Spina Bifida Service consists of a team of specialists with extensive experience in dealing with the issues that patients with spina bifida have, and with the surgical and medical management of the disease. The specialists include three neurosurgeons, two urologists, one pediatrician, one physiotherapist and one nurse. Orthopedic specialists and occupational therapists are also available to provide consultation to patients.

Our services

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Spina Bifida Service offers:

  • A twice-monthly clinic where patients are seen on a regular basis
  • The services of a pediatrician and a nurse who are available by phone for problems that arise
  • Coordination of care when patients are hospitalized
  • Communication with outside doctors or other institutions through detailed clinic reports
Where the care happens

Due to the complex nature of problems related to spina bifida, our specialists from different disciplines work together in a multidisciplinary setting to see patients. This is achieved through our clinics which are held twice monthly at The Montreal Children’s Hospital.
