Services offered

Consultation Screening Guidelines:

Provides tertiary level care or above for children with challenging and complex neurological conditions. Inpatient consultation services are provided on a 24/7 basis to all areas of the MCH including the Emergency Room, intensive care units and wards, both medical and surgical. Ambulatory services are provided through initial consultation, and where absolutely necessary, on an ongoing basis to the following categories of neurological illness: epilepsy or convulsive disorders that are not related to fever; neurodevelopmental disabilities (i.e. global developmental delay, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, developmental language impairment); neuromuscular disorders; headaches refractory to initial standard prophylaxis management; complex movement disorders (i.e. dystonia, chorea, athetosis, ataxia, spasticity, tremors) requiring medical intervention; neurogenetic, neurometabolic and neurocutaneous disorders; demyelinating disorders; and high risk survivors of the NICU and PICU.

The Division is undergoing a restructuring in its clinical services that will see a re-orientation towards a programmatic model of service delivery. A screening process for consultations has been implemented and only referrals deemed appropriate subsequent to screening and fulfilling the above mandate will be seen. Present resources are not sufficient to see all referrals and in order to permit the timely and expeditious evaluation and follow-up of children requiring neurological intervention the following categories of referrals will not be seen: 1) patients with routine headache who have not received a course of migraine prophylaxis; 2) behavioural disorders (i.e. oppositional defiance disorder, conduct disorder, episodic dyscontrol syndrome); 3) school related problems (i.e. ADHD, learning disabilities); 4) tics or Tourette's Syndrome not requiring medication intervention; 5) autistic spectrum disorders; and 6) febrile seizures, both typical and atypical.
