MCH welcomes Dr. Sherif Emil as new director of Pediatric General Surgery

Dr. Sherif Emil has been appointed as the new director of the Division of Pediatric General Surgery at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Emil graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, and spent one year in graduate studies at Rice University in Houston, before starting his medical education at McGill. After graduating from McGill in 1991, he moved to California to start his residency in general surgery at Loma Linda University. He returned to McGill in 1999 to complete a two year clinical fellowship in pediatric surgery, after which he returned to California to join the surgical faculty at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He became Chief of Pediatric Surgery at UCI in 2005.

Dr. Emil has been active in basic and clinical research, publishing more than 40 manuscripts and several book chapters on a number of topics in pediatric surgery. He has a passion for teaching, and was honored with five major teaching awards while at UCI.

His work with UCI medical students on the drive for national health insurance earned him the American Medical Student Government Leadership and Service Award in 2008. Dr. Emil has also participated in three missions to east Africa where he operates, teaches, and lectures.    

Dr. Emil is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. His many accomplishments led to his selection as one of America’s Best Doctors in 2007.  

Dr. Emil is committed to continuing a strong clinical and academic profile for the Division of Pediatric General Surgery at the MCH, to initiating innovative clinical programs, and to offering the children of Montreal and Quebec the best surgical care.
