The Director of the Research Instituteof the MUHC elected to the Académie nationale de médecine in France

Montreal, 2 July 2008 - The achievements realised during his career as a researcher by Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos, Director of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and Associate Executive Director of the MUHC, have once again been recognized and rewarded internationally.

At their last meeting the members of the French Académie nationale de Médecine elected Dr. Papadopoulos as a "foreign corresponding member" of the Division of biological and pharmaceutical sciences, thereby giving him entry into one of the most prestigious public health institutions in France.

"This recognition demonstrates the international influence of Dr. Papadopoulos's work and the respect he elicits from his peers. We are very proud to benefit not only from his expertise and leadership as director of our Research Institute but also from his own research projects," said Dr. Arthur T. Porter, Director General and CEO of the McGill University Health Centre. "This honour shows that the MUHC attracts the best researchers in the world and that our future is indeed promising."

The Académie nationale de médecine is comprised of French and international experts. It was founded in 1820 with the mandate to advise the French government on public health issues and "to contribute to the progress of various branches in the art of healing." The fact that members are peer-elected ensures its independence and the quality of its findings. This organization therefore holds a special place within the various French institutions working in the field of health.

The Académie nationale de Médecine is a member of many European and international networks, such as the InterAcademy Medical Panel, whose purpose is to promote institutional cooperation and to make advances in multiple world health issues.
