Dr. Sam Daniel of The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC among Canada's Top 40 under 40

Montreal - May 1, 2009 - The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is pleased to announce that Dr. Sam Daniel, Director Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, is a recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40* for 2008.

Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 is a prestigious national award program, which annually honours 40 Canadians in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors under the age of 40.

An independent Advisory Board, comprised of 25 business leaders from across Canada, selected Dr. Daniel and his peers from over 1100 nominees. Honourees were chosen on five key criteria: vision and leadership; innovation and achievement; impact; community involvement and contribution; and strategy for growth.

Dr. Daniel is currently the new Director of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at The Montreal Children’s Hospital and Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology at McGill University.

After completing his postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Sam Daniel was recruited by The Children’s in 2003. He then founded the McGill Auditory Sciences Laboratory that he currently directs.

Dr. Daniel has been a major contributor to the MCH in every respect. He is an acclaimed researcher whose work has been published in many journals and featured prominently in the media. His most recent study revealed certain over-the-counter earwax softeners containing the active ingredient triethanolamine polypeptide oleate condensate (10%) can cause severe inflammation and damage to the eardrum and inner ear. The results of the study, which were published in The Laryngoscope in 2008, suggest that use of these medications should be discouraged.

He has presented his research at several local, national and international conferences. A dedicated teacher, his students greatly admire him as an educator and mentor. He created a unique, multi-disciplinary salivary management clinic, a first in Quebec. His innovative use of BOTOX injection as an alternative to tracheostomy treatment brought international attention to The Montreal Children’s Hospital. Dr Daniel is currently in Europe as an invited professor to share his novel technique.

To the countless patients and families helped by Dr. Daniel, he is a saviour. They speak of him with the highest level of gratitude, for his knowledge, skill, patience, persistence, and heartfelt compassion.

Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 program, now in its 14th year, is managed by founding sponsor, The Caldwell Partners International. In addition to The Caldwell Partners, national sponsors include Deloitte, National Bank Financial, The Globe and Mail, and Air Canada.

The 2008 Recipients of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 are featured in The Globe and Mail on May 1st. Honourees will attend a series of celebratory events at the beginning of May in Toronto, including an Awards Ceremony to be held at Arcadian Court at 12 noon on Tuesday, May 5th where they are presented with their Top 40 Crystal Cube.
