MONTREAL - The Sun Youth Organization has donated than 1,000 new bicycles to needy youngsters over the past 26 years as part of an annual event, but, this year, it seems the Montreal charitable group can't give the bicycles away.

Only 20 children's names have been put forward so far this year for 50 new bicycles that will be distributed during the first week of June as part of the 27th annual Bicycle Giveaway.

"It seems we have the bikes but we don't have the takers," said Sid Stevens, of Sun Youth.

"There's so much happening in the world right now," Stevens added, surmising that the news out of Japan, Libya and Egypt may have lead some to overlook the bicycle giveaway that is made possible as a result of a generous, anonymous donor.

By this time last year, Stevens said, the organization had received 280 children's names. This year, he said, they have only 20.

Sun Youth is appealing to teachers, parents, police officers, social workers, neighbours - anybody, really, who knows a someone 7 to 15 years old and deserving of a new bike. The deadline for nominations is March 31. Your submission should be 50 to 60 words in length and explain why the child should receive a new bicycle, helmet and lock.

Nominations can be mailed to Bicycle Giveaway, Sun Youth Bicycle Committee, 4251 St. Urbain St., Montreal, H2W 1V6 or faxed to 514-842-5241 or emailed to [email protected].
