Recruiting the next generation of health care professionals

The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC hosts 3rd Annual Student Career Day

Event designed to entice students in to the health care field by giving them a taste of the various of careers available

Montréal, January 22, 2009 – The economy is looking pretty bleak right now, but one sector with plenty of job openings is health care.  There is a dire lack of health professionals in many fields including nursing, pharmacy and radiology technology. For this reason, The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is hosting its third annual Student Career Day January 27 and February 3. Some 400 grade 10 and 11 students from over 21 French and English private and public schools will attend the half-day bilingual event.

Eight health care professionals will talk about their jobs what they love and hate about their work, what type of schooling they completed, why they choose their particular field. They will also give the students a peek in to their daily activities.

“Often when people think of the health care field the job titles that readily jump to mind are doctor and nurse. We wanted to let students know that there are a multitude of interesting jobs available in the health care field; jobs with a 100% guarantee of employment upon graduation. By hosting Student Career Day, we’re starting a relationship with the health care professionals of the future. Hopefully, when the time comes they will choose to work at the MCH,“ says Lisa Dutton, Manager of Public Relations and Communications

Originally, a career day was scheduled for January 27, but within a week and a half of issuing invitations, every seat was taken and there were 100 students on a waiting list.  To accommodate  demand a second day was added, February 3. It quickly filled up too.
