OTTAWA - Due to the potential for a serious fall-related injury, Health Canada is advising Canadians to immediately stop using all cribs with the model number 612C19CH by Bambino Reale Furniture, a subsidiary of Ragazzi Furniture.

Following the investigation of a complaint made by a consumer in Alberta, it was determined that these products do not meet the labelling and minimum side height requirement for cribs established by the Cribs and Cradles Regulations under the Hazardous Products Act [1] (HPA). The HPA is administered and enforced by Health Canada's Consumer Product Safety Bureau [2].

These cribs do not provide an adequate barrier to prevent infants and young children from falling or climbing out of these cribs. Their continued use could result in serious injury following a fall from the crib, such as broken bones, fractures or concussions.

Bambino Reale Furniture and its parent company, Ragazzi Furniture, a Quebec-based nursery furniture manufacturer, have gone out of business. In addition to manufacturing nursery furniture, Ragazzi Furniture also imported furniture from Chile through its subsidiary, Bambino Reale Furniture. The crib model that is the subject of this advisory was manufactured in Chile.

Since the responsible companies are no longer in business, Health Canada has been unsuccessful in its attempts to gain information regarding the number of these non-compliant cribs sold in Canada or the period over which these cribs were sold.

To date, Health Canada has not received any reports of injuries related to these cribs. Nevertheless, Health Canada strongly advises the public to stop using this particular model of crib by Bambino Reale Furniture. These products should be disassembled and disposed of in such a way that they cannot be used again. Consumers are encouraged to notify Health Canada should they find these non-compliant products for sale.
