Mary Ann Ferguson, a devoted MCH volunteer and health professional, recently resigned as vice-chair of the Council for Services to Children and Adolescents (CSCA).
Ms. Ferguson has been an active volunteer and health professional for over thirty years. She trained as a social worker and specialized in mental health, working at the Allan Memorial Institute, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and The Montreal Children’s Hospital. Since 1986, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the MCH, now the Council for Services to Children and Adolescents of the MUHC, and she served on the founding Interim Board of the MUHC from 1994-7, as well as the current Board.
Ms. Ferguson is credited with transforming the look of the MCH thanks to her position as Chair of the Task Force on Pediatric Design (the multidisciplinary healing environment committee). “The walls of this hospital used to be painted a drab green,” recalls Dr. Nicolas Steinmetz, former Executive Director of the MCH and current Chair of the MCH Foundation. He went on to say that efforts to introduce livelier paint colours and whimsical child-friendly art work met with a lot of resistance, but thanks to Ms. Ferguson’s persistence, the hospital was transformed into a welcoming healing environment.
“Mary Ann stood firmly in defense of the MCH no matter what crisis we were dealing with,” says Mr. Eric Maldoff, formerly Chair of the MCH Board of Directors. He and Ms. Ferguson worked together on the board during the MUHC merger process. “Our patients and the quality of care remained her focus. The MCH was always top of mind.”
Some of the other positions Ms. Ferguson has held include Chair of the MCH Revision Committee (the body that deals with complaints and other quality and performance matters), member of the MUHC Human Resources Committee, and member of the MUHC Project Steering Committee which oversees the management of the MUHC’s new hospital projects.
