Medical Day Hospital

The MDH is a 10-bed unit that is open seven days a week. We have added additional activities and expertise to provide comprehensive medical ambulatory care, and prevent hospitalization and Emergency Department visits.

Who we are

The Medical Day Hospital provides an alternative to hospitalization for patients with ongoing medical problems requiring day treatments or investigations. The overall objective of the Medical Day Hospital is to avoid hospital admissions and to facilitate hospital discharges. It is an alternative for patients who do not require 24-hour medical and/or nursing monitoring.

Our history

The Medical Day Hospital first opened in 2005 as an alternative to hospitalization for patients who did not require 24 hours of medical/nursing supervision but with care needs that could not be met by any other existing program within the hospital or within the community. The Medical Day Hospital started with 3 treatment spaces on a medical inpatient unit with the initial goal of helping patients and families avoid prolonged hospitalizations.

Today, the Medical Day Hospital has 14 treatment spaces open 7 days/week. We have since added other care activities and expertise to provide comprehensive day hospital services while preventing hospitalizations and emergency department visits.

On average, the day hospital provides care to 15-20 patients per day.

Our team

The Medical Day Hospital team consists of 2 full-time and 5 part-time pediatric nurse clinicians, a nursing assistant and a secretary

A pediatrician from the Division of General Pediatrics is assigned to the day hospital.  Medical and nursing trainees are also assigned to the day hospital.

Administrative team

  • Nadia Eldaoud, Clinical manager
  • Nathalie Aubin, Assistant Head Nurse
  • Dr. Hema Patel, Medical Director
  • Isabelle St-Sauveur, Clinical Nurse Specialist

Where the care happens

The day hospital is part of the Pediatric Day Centre and is located on the first floor (RC) of the B Bloc in room 2238.  The 14 open treatment spaces are organized around a nursing station and in close proximity to the Complex Care Service and the Dialysis and Apheresis Program, also part of the Pediatric Day Center.   The day hospital is located just one floor above the Emergency Department.
